The Importance of Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment involves removing the inner pulp of the tooth, which contains its living tissue. The space is then filled with a durable material to restore the tooth’s full functionality. This procedure helps extend the life of your natural tooth while protecting the surrounding jawbone and tissues. Choosing root canal therapy when needed can save you from future pain and expenses while maintaining your tooth’s health. After treatment, restoring the tooth with a durable dental crown helps protect it and ensures long-term strength.

Signs you may need root canal therapy include:

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold.
  • Severe tooth pain.
  • Swelling or redness in the gums near the tooth.
  • Tooth discolouration.
  • An abscess or pimple on the gums.

Regular teeth cleanings and thorough exams make it easier to spot these warning signs early, reducing the chance of serious infection.

A Walkthrough of Root Canal Treatment

Usually completed in one or two visits, root canal therapy is performed by a skilled dentist or endodontist. Here’s an overview of the procedure:

Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

An X-ray is taken to examine the affected tooth and nearby bone, helping pinpoint the cause of your symptoms. Antibiotics may be recommended if necessary to manage swelling and infection. Reducing abscess-related inflammation helps alleviate pressure and enhances comfort during the procedure.

If gum concerns are present, therapies such as LANAP / gum disease treatment or pinhole gum therapy can support healing around the affected area.

Preparing the Tooth

To ensure your comfort, the area is carefully numbed, including your gums, teeth, and surrounding tissues. Once you’re comfortable, a small opening is made in the tooth, allowing the removal of the pulp, damaged nerve tissue, bacteria, and debris.

Sealing and Healing

If an abscess is present, medication may be placed inside the tooth to eliminate infection. For treatments requiring multiple visits, a temporary filling is used to protect the area, often providing significant relief. Once the tooth is fully cleaned and infection-free, it is permanently sealed.

Our priority is your comfort and delivering a smooth procedure that restores your oral health and peace of mind.

Cost of a root canal in Midlothian

The cost of dental treatment varies widely, but saving the tooth with a root canal is more cost-efficient in the long run. With a typical insurance plan, root canal therapy has an average out-of-pocket cost of around $200 to $500+. After an oral exam, we would be happy to provide you with an accurate quote for your insurance company so you can find out your actual out-of-pocket costs. Without insurance, you can expect to pay anywhere from $600 to $1200+ for treatment.

Why is there such a wide ballpark estimate of the cost? When we generate a quote for root canal therapy we consider factors like:
  • The severity of the infection.
  • The location of the infection in your mouth.
  • The health of the surrounding teeth and gums.
  • Complications which may require more time or a delicate and experienced touch.

No dental practice can provide an accurate quote over the phone. Every case is different so it's important to speak with a dentist who can evaluate your unique situation and provide you with all your treatment options for your consideration.

Is there an alternative treatment to root canals?

An abscess or infection in your tooth is extremely dangerous and considered an urgent health matter. Many people think of root canals as some sort of ‘lesser evil’ to end excruciating dental pain. More important than that, root canals remove an infection that can spread and become life-threatening, requiring much more urgent and invasive care. This is why we work tirelessly to fight the reputation that root canal therapy has gained and why your comfort and peace-of-mind is so important to us.

If you think you may have an infection but you really don’t want a root canal, we strongly encourage you to reach out to us anyways. We will not perform any procedure without your full understanding and consent and may have alternative options for you with the ultimate goal of resolving your infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

This procedure involves removing damaged or infected pulp from inside a tooth, then sealing the tooth to stop further infection and restore function.

This treatment is necessary to preserve a tooth with severely infected or damaged pulp, avoiding the need for extraction.

Indicators include intense tooth pain, sensitivity to temperature, swelling, and tenderness near the affected area.

Thanks to modern techniques and anesthesia, the procedure is generally comfortable, often providing relief from infection-related pain.

The treatment typically requires one or two sessions, with each appointment lasting around 90 minutes.

Yes, you can drive after the procedure since the effects of anesthesia wear off quickly.

In most cases, a crown is recommended to restore and protect the treated tooth.

Recovery is usually brief, with mild discomfort lasting a few days. Over-the-counter pain medication can help manage any soreness.

You can eat once the numbness subsides but should avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it’s fully restored.

With proper care and regular maintenance, a tooth treated with a root canal can last a lifetime.

Keeping your natural tooth with a root canal is the preferred choice, as it maintains your smile and prevents complications from tooth loss.

The main alternative is tooth extraction, but this can lead to issues like shifting teeth and bone loss. Consult your dentist to determine the best solution for your needs.

You will not regret coming to hangout with this kind & compassionate crew! It’s also a bonus that they also take good care of you & your mouth! I have dental anxiety and they eased my racing mind. My first visit with Laura & Dr Collin Muhler was exceptional! Do they know their stuff? Yes. Will they laugh at your oddly timed jokes? Yes (at least the first time). Will they explain everything including all of your procedures and costs? Yes. Will you leave with a fancy lip balm and a cup for your toddler? Yes. I want to “gate-keep” as the kids say, but this practice deserves all 5 stars and for you to know they live/work up to their professional and personal values.

Absolutely love this practice. Everyone is so kind and welcoming. I’m not a huge fan of going to the dentist, but everyone here made it a much better experience! Dr. Muhler is amazing and takes the time to explain everything in much detail and listens to your concerns without making you feel rushed. I have found my new dental home.

I’ve haven’t been to a dentist in over five year. Last week I went through my insurance to find a new place. My old dentist retired, new dentist doesn’t take my insurance. Boy did I hit the jackpot. When I came in I was greeted by a friendly receptionist. Filled out my paperwork then quickly got called back. Kayla my hygienist was so thorough with my cleaning, explained everything to me, and made me feel so comfortable. Dr. Mahler was so nice. He explained everything to me, made sure if I had any questions they were answered. They didn’t make me feel bad that I haven’t been to the dentist in a while. The office is clean and has a nice homely feel to it. So glad I found this place.
