Chao Pinhole® Gum Recession Therapy

What is Gum Recession?

Gum recession is the loss of tissue along the natural gum line, which can be caused by the body’s natural aging process, periodontal disease, or even by brushing the teeth too hard. Tooth roots become exposed as gums shrink, increasing the chance of tooth decay, infection, and tooth loss. Many patients don’t even realize their gums are receding, and when they find out the only way to treat it is with invasive gum surgery, they would rather just let the problem persist. If your gums are receding, you should seek treatment as soon as possible if you want to save your teeth. If you live in or near Midlothian, you’re in luck because we offer a revolutionary gum recession therapy at Hawkins Family Dentistry.

Reverse Gum Recession without Surgery or Grafting

Traditionally, the only way we could treat gum recession was with invasive surgical techniques like gum grafting, which involves cutting tissue from another part of the mouth (usually the roof) and attaching it to the gums with sutures to supplement the gum tissue. Recovery often involves swelling and bleeding, and can take several weeks of unsightly sutures in your gums before you can see real results.

Thankfully, Dr. John Chao has developed a revolutionary alternative therapy that actually stimulates new tissue growth – without scalpels and sutures. We are thrilled to offer this cutting-edge treatment for our patients in Midlothian that makes gum recession therapy less invasive, more comfortable, and with better results than ever!

Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique

Dr. Hawkins uses a tiny needle to poke the affected gum tissue, allowing redistribution and adjustment of existing, healthy tissue as needed. The Chao Pinhole surgical technique is scalpel- and suture-free, shortening procedure and patient recovery times from 2-3 weeks for traditional gum graft surgery to a small perforation that will have completely disappeared within 24 hours.

Chao Pinhole therapy offers significant advantages by eliminating surgical incisions and post-op recovery time, dramatically reducing pain and swelling, maintaining the aesthetics of the smile, and allowing an unlimited number of teeth to be treated in one visit.

The Chao Pinhole method is not meant to cure gum disease. Its sole purpose is to recreate a normal gum line and protect the teeth. If a patient also requires attention for gum disease or other periodontal issues, Dr. Hawkins will administer those treatments prior to beginning Chao Pinhole treatment.
